Scalapay is a buy now, pay later (BNPL) payment method. Customers in Italy, France, Portugal and Spain split the purchase into three interest-free instalments. Payrails processes Scalapay through Adyen.

How a Scalapay payment works

Scalapay is a redirect payment method:
  1. The customer selects Scalapay at checkout.
  2. Payrails returns a redirect URL from Adyen, and the customer goes to Scalapay.
  3. The customer approves the instalment plan on the Scalapay page.
  4. Scalapay sends the customer back to your returnInfo URL.
  5. Payrails receives the final result from Adyen and updates the payment.
Every Scalapay payment is customer-initiated: the customer approves each plan on their own. Scalapay supports both instant and delayed capture, so you authorize at checkout and capture when you ship the order.

Supported currencies and countries

Scalapay supports EUR (euro) as its only presentment currency. Payrails rejects other currencies before it calls Adyen.

Supported workflows

Before you begin

Complete these steps before you send your first Scalapay payment through Adyen:
  1. Set up an Adyen integration in your workspace. Follow the Adyen integration setup guide if you don’t have one yet.
  2. Ask Adyen to enable Scalapay on your Adyen merchant account.
  3. In the Payrails Portal, go to Settings → Integrations, open your Adyen integration, select Scalapay under Payment methods, and save.
  4. Add Scalapay as a payment option in your workflow.

Request fields for Adyen

Send these fields in the authorize request, in addition to the standard authorize fields. Payrails checks Required fields and returns an error when one is missing. Fields required by the PSP pass the Payrails checks but the PSP can decline the payment without them.

Authorize a Scalapay payment

Call authorize a payment with scalapay as the paymentMethodCode. The response includes the redirect to Scalapay.
Authorize request
After the customer approves the plan, Scalapay returns them to your success or error URL. Confirm the result through webhook notifications or the execution status before you fulfill the order.

How Adyen handles Scalapay

  • Adyen confirms the authorization by webhook. Scalapay isn’t captured automatically: with delayed capture, the payment stays authorized until you capture it or cancel it.
  • Partial captures, and several captures against one authorization, work only when Adyen enables multiple partial captures on your merchant account.
  • When you refund a payment you captured separately, Payrails tells Adyen which capture the refund belongs to.
  • Scalapay supports customer-initiated payments only. Payrails rejects the CardOnFile, MOTO, Subscription and Unscheduled processing types for Scalapay, and doesn’t save the instrument even when you set storeInstrument.
