UnionPay is a payment network based in China. With the UnionPay payment method, customers in mainland China confirm the payment on a UnionPay page instead of entering card details at your checkout. Payrails processes UnionPay through Worldpay.

How a UnionPay payment works

UnionPay is a redirect payment method:
  1. The customer selects UnionPay at checkout.
  2. Payrails returns a redirect URL from Worldpay, and the customer goes to UnionPay.
  3. The customer confirms the payment on the UnionPay page.
  4. UnionPay sends the customer back to your returnInfo URL.
  5. Payrails receives the final result from Worldpay and updates the payment.
Each payment is single-use: the customer confirms every payment on its own. Payrails captures UnionPay payments immediately, so a successful payment is final.

Supported currencies and countries

Payrails sends the currency you provide to Worldpay without checking it first. Worldpay rejects a currency that UnionPay doesn’t support.

Supported workflows

Before you begin

Complete these steps before you send your first UnionPay payment through Worldpay:
  1. Set up a Worldpay integration in your workspace. Contact your Payrails account team if Worldpay isn’t listed in your Payrails Portal yet.
  2. Ask Worldpay to enable UnionPay on your Worldpay entity.
  3. In the Payrails Portal, go to Settings → Integrations, open your Worldpay integration, select UnionPay under Payment methods, and save.
  4. Add UnionPay as a payment option in your workflow.

Request fields for Worldpay

Send these fields in the authorize request, in addition to the standard authorize fields. Payrails checks Required fields and returns an error when one is missing. Fields required by the PSP pass the Payrails checks but the PSP can decline the payment without them. Payrails doesn’t send a billing country or customer details to Worldpay for UnionPay.

Authorize a UnionPay payment

Call authorize a payment with unionPay as the paymentMethodCode. The response includes the redirect to UnionPay.
Authorize request
After the customer confirms the payment, UnionPay returns them to your success or error URL. Confirm the result through webhook notifications or the execution status before you fulfill the order.

How Worldpay handles UnionPay

  • Payrails sets the UnionPay page language to English (en).
  • Payrails gives Worldpay success, pending and failure return URLs for UnionPay, with no separate cancel URL. A payment that doesn’t complete returns the customer to your error URL.
  • When Worldpay reports the payment as pending after the redirect, Payrails waits for the Worldpay webhook to set the final status.
  • Save Instruments and merchant-initiated transactions (MIT) aren’t available for UnionPay through Worldpay.
