The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) runs the interbank payment rails in Nigeria. Customers pay directly from their Nigerian bank account. Payrails offers two NIBSS payment methods, each with its own paymentMethodCode:
  • NIBSS Pay, with the code nibssPay.
  • NIBSS Instant Pay, with the code nibssInstantPay.
Payrails processes both NIBSS payment methods through Boku. Pick the PSP below for its setup steps and request examples.

How a NIBSS payment works

NIBSS is a redirect payment method:
  1. The customer selects NIBSS Pay or NIBSS Instant Pay at checkout.
  2. Payrails returns a redirect URL from the PSP, and the customer goes to the PSP’s payment page.
  3. The customer follows the steps on the payment page to pay from their bank account.
  4. The PSP sends the customer back to your returnInfo URL.
  5. Payrails receives the final result from the PSP and updates the payment.
Each payment is single-use: the customer confirms every payment on its own. Payrails captures NIBSS payments immediately, so a successful payment is final. To return funds, refund the payment.

Supported currencies and countries

NIBSS supports NGN (Nigerian naira) as its presentment currency.

Integrate NIBSS

Choose the PSP that processes NIBSS for you. The guide covers the PSP-side setup, the Payrails configuration and the request fields that PSP requires.

Ways to integrate NIBSS

  • Payrails SDK: the Web SDK shows NIBSS Pay and NIBSS Instant Pay when your workflow returns them as payment options, and redirects the customer to the PSP’s payment page. To control how the redirect opens, listen for the actionRequired event.
  • Payrails API: call lookup payment options, then authorize with nibssPay or nibssInstantPay as the paymentMethodCode. The PSP guide lists the meta fields that PSP requires.
In both cases, confirm the final result through webhook notifications or the execution status. Don’t treat the customer’s return to your success URL as proof of payment.
